A magnitude 8.7 earthquake near Kamchatka, Russia, prompted a tsunami advisory for parts of B.C.’s coast, including Haida Gwaii and Vancouver Island. Local governments are activating emergency plans. A tsunami warning is also in effect for Hawaii and parts of Alaska, with Japan issuing alerts for its Pacific coast.
