Fifty-one Texas Democratic lawmakers have fled to Illinois to block a Republican-backed redistricting map that would create five new Republican-leaning congressional seats. The absence denies Republicans the quorum needed for a vote. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has threatened fines and arrests for the fleeing lawmakers, who argue they are resisting a “rigged system.”
