Mali’s military government seized over $117 million in gold from Barrick’s Loulo-Gounkoto mine, following a law allowing junta leader Colonel Assimi Goïta to remain in power indefinitely. The gold was taken by state helicopters amid ongoing disputes between Barrick and the junta, which has controlled Mali since a 2021 coup. Barrick is pursuing international arbitration.
