The Government of Canada announces a CAD 910,000 investment to support new entrepreneurs in Saskatchewan through the Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority Inc. (SREDA). The funding, provided via Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan), will expand the SK Startup Institute’s services over two years to help startups and small businesses in both rural and urban communities across the province. The program aims to provide personalized guidance, business advising, workshops, training, and events to foster entrepreneurship and economic growth.

Federal Funding Aims to Boost Saskatchewan Entrepreneurship

Small businesses are vital to Saskatchewan’s economy but face challenges such as market understanding, business planning, financing, licensing, and managing early risks. To address these barriers, the Canadian government channels funding through PrairiesCan to SREDA’s SK Startup Institute. This initiative offers tailored support to help entrepreneurs transform ideas into viable businesses.

The CAD 910,000 investment will enable the SK Startup Institute to reach more founders in Regina, Saskatoon, and other communities by providing one-on-one advising, workshops, and training sessions. Delivery will be flexible, including in-person meetings, phone and video consultations, and online platforms to ensure accessibility for entrepreneurs regardless of their location or sector.

Government officials emphasize that the funding will help create jobs, support business growth, and build economic resilience in Saskatchewan. They recognize the importance of organizations like SREDA and the SK Startup Institute in strengthening the Prairie economy through mentorship, connections, and practical support.

SREDA leadership welcomes the funding, noting that each successful business starts with someone willing to take a chance on an idea. The expanded support will enable the institute to serve more entrepreneurs who contribute to local economic development and employment.

Entrepreneurs who have worked with the SK Startup Institute describe its role as invaluable in navigating early-stage uncertainties and gaining confidence through access to resources and expert guidance. The program expects to assist approximately 1,250 entrepreneurs annually and conduct more than 3,000 business support interactions each year.

Over the next two years, the initiative plans to train 1,200 participants, provide 6,000 advisory services, and serve 2,500 clients across multiple sectors. This project is part of PrairiesCan’s Regional Innovation Ecosystems Program, which invests in non-profit organizations that help businesses innovate, grow, and compete.

PrairiesCan’s Regional Innovation Ecosystems Program focuses on strengthening inclusive economic ecosystems by supporting business innovation and growth through strategic investments in organizations like SREDA.
