US Embassy in Riyadh Targeted by Iranian Drone Strikes

The US embassy in Riyadh was struck by two Iranian drones on Monday, prompting American nationals in Saudi Arabia to shelter in place, officials said.

Details of the Drone Attack

The Iranian drone strikes targeted the US diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh. The embassy was empty at the time, and no casualties were reported, according to US officials. The attacks came amid heightened tensions in the region as the United States escalates its military campaign against Iran.

US citizens in Saudi Arabia were advised to remain indoors and take shelter as a precautionary measure. No further damage or injuries have been confirmed beyond the embassy grounds.

Context of Operation Epic Fury

The strikes coincide with the ongoing US military campaign labelled “Operation Epic Fury,” targeting Iran’s offensive missile capabilities. The operation represents the most substantial US military presence in the region for a generation, according to the US Central Command.

The US Central Command emphasised the precision of the strikes, asserting that US forces are “hitting Iran surgically, overwhelmingly, and unapologetically,” with a focus on dismantling Iranian missile infrastructure.

This strategic military posture follows a series of escalating clashes between US forces and Iranian-backed groups across the Middle East. Riyadh’s role as a regional ally to Washington has placed it in the crosshairs amid this conflict.

International and Local Reactions

Saudi authorities have not publicly commented on the incident, but the strikes have raised concerns about the security of diplomatic missions in the region. The United States reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its personnel and assets abroad.

The attack is part of a broader context of increased hostilities following years of tension between the US and Iran, particularly over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional influence.

Iran has not formally claimed responsibility for the drone strikes, but US officials and analysts attribute the attack to Tehran given the drones’ origin and the ongoing conflict dynamics.

Background to the Escalation

Relations between the United States and Iran have deteriorated sharply since the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018. In recent months, tensions have intensified following a series of military confrontations and reciprocal attacks across the Middle East.

The US campaign, Operation Epic Fury, seeks to degrade Iran’s missile capabilities, which Washington considers a significant threat to regional stability and US interests.

Saudi Arabia remains a key US ally in the Gulf, hosting American forces and intelligence operations aimed at countering Iranian influence. The embassy drone strike underscores the precarious security environment in the region.
